Introduction to Robots and Drones

During this unit you will learn to program Robots and Drones. Programming is sometimes called Coding and involves using a programming language to give commands to devices such as Robots. The coding language you are going to be using is called Blockly.

You are going to be using Jimu Astrobot Robots like Rover, pictured left. You are also going to be using Tello Drones.

To successfully program these devices you are going to write and organise Blockly code using the Jimu Robot App and another app called Tello EDU.

To get us started lets watch the video below that outlines how important Robots (including Drones which are Flying Robots) are becoming to the world we live in.

Getting Started Tasks

In order to be successful in this unit you will need to use some applications and systems that you might not have seen before. Your teacher will now demonstrate how to do the following things.

You then have to do them yourself to show your understanding:

Download the Robot and Drone Workbook, rename it surname firstname R&D Workbook e.g. Mouse Minnie R&D Workbook and save it into a folder called Ideas and Innovations that you need to create in your Documents folder (OneDrive - Loreto College Coorparoo).

After renaming the workbook, open it up and move on to the next step.

In some activities you will need to use your laptop camera to take pictures of your coded solutions on the ChromeBooks so it is important you become familiar with how to do this.

Use your laptop camera to take a photo of yourself.

Insert it into the marked space on the first page of your workbook.

Click on the image and use the Crop function (located at the top-right of the tool bar) to remove the top and edges so your image is a portrait style, as shown to the right.

Save your workbook by clicking on the save icon in the top-left corner of the application or by selecting File > Save.

The final step is to share your workbook with your teacher.

Close Publisher then right-click on your workbook file and select Share.

Enter the name of your teacher and click on send.
